About us

Schaakclub Jean Jaurès was founded in 1945 at the Jean Jaurès community center on Ryhovelaan in Ghent, named after the French socialist Jean Jaurès. Over the following decades the club became a fixture of Ghent’s chess scene, culminating in the national championship in 1971 and 1973, in the top division of the interclub competition.

Today the club plays in the East Flanders league (VSF), fielding teams in the second and fifth division. But our club isn’t just about competition — we want to be a friendly, low-pressure place for anyone who enjoys a game of chess, whether you’ve played club chess for years, or you’re just taking the step from playing online or at a bar to joining a real club.
